Patagonia Adventure
On Saturday, December 15, I will begin another motorcycle adventure. This will be my first trip to the continent of South America.
Specifically, I am going to Patagonia which is the southernmost tip of South
America and includes sections of both Argentina and Chile. One of the
stops is the town of Ushuaia which is the southernmost town (of any size) on
the planet! At this point we will only be about 600 miles from
Antarctica. Fortunately, it will be summer there, but because we will
be so far south during part of the trip and we will be criss-crossing the
Andes mountains at times, some warm riding gear is going to be required.
The trip is being arranged through Moto Rent Adventure. This is very small group tour; just myself and Pradeep (who happens to be my manager as well!) who orchestrated the creation of this trip and was kind enough to asked if others wished to join him. The trip will be 2 weeks in length with travel starting on Dec 15 and ending on December 30. We will be riding for 12 days and require an additional 2 days of travel to and from Indianapolis. We will have a tour guide who will be driving a 4-wheel drive vehicle to carry our luggage, camping gear, extra supplies, basic motorcycle repair equipment, etc. During the trip we plan to camp 3 nights and the remainder will be spent in hotels.
Below are map images from our tour guide of where we will be traveling. Basically, we fly into Punta Arenas and do a loop to the southern tip of the continent and then ride north until we reach Coyhaique which is where we will then fly home from. The trip is approximately 2,000 miles.
We will be riding Yamaha Tenere XT660Z motorcycles which are single cylinder adventure bikes which are capable on both asphalt and dirt roads. As we have a support vehicle with us to carry our luggage, it will make the bikes much lighter to handle in the rougher terrain.
I hope you enjoy following my blog during this adventure. I do these blogs for 2 reasons.
The first is for me. I find that without the blog, the days quickly blur together and many of the details of what I have done, what I have seen, and what I experience quickly gets lost with all the activity and excitement of the journey. It is also nice to be able to go back to these blogs days, months, and years later to revisit and remember the opportunities I have had.
The second is you! Every time I do a blog for a trip, I get many comments from people how much they enjoy reading them. Some people are only able to dream of doing such trips. Others, would have no desire do such trips but enjoy the adventure anyway. For some, this is a way to see parts of the world they will never be able to see for themselves. Whatever your reason is, I hope to share enough information and photos to at least pique your interest and maybe even encourage you to take your own adventure.
Life is short. We don't know what tomorrow will bring. Enjoy your life; you only get one chance to live it!

thanks for the pre-trip announcement! I say it again Rick, I live out my cycle trip dreams through your adventures. Blessings my friend! Thanks for the invite to follow your journey!
ReplyDeleteWhen you get to Ushuia and go through the park to the end of the road, there is a small shelter by signs saying how far to different places. Reach up between the wood and tin roof. Check for gum wrappers we left for the next people we know who go there. Enjoy it is beautiful.
